The majority of the 350,000 known beetle species (order Coleoptera)—about one-quarter of all currently known animals—are among the most thoroughly armored insects. Even their front wings have become hard and opaque, armor plating that covers the membranous, flightworthy hind wings and sheathes much of the body. (In Greek, Coleoptera means “sheath wing.”) With its forewings (elytra) snapped shut, a beetle is “like an insectan tank, able to resist attack while penetrating all sorts of semisolid [substances],” Stephen Marshall wrote.
